We are asked all the time, what families should bring with them for swimming lessons at Swim Experts. To be honest, whether you are swimming with us, or at another swim school – when it comes to swimming lessons for children, ensuring they have the right swimwear is not just a matter of comfort—it’s a matter of safety and hygiene. Choosing appropriate, firm-fitting swimwear plays a vital role in keeping the pool clean and ensuring that everyone can enjoy a safe, uninterrupted swim. For younger children who are not yet fully toilet trained, the use of swim nappies is essential, and this is reflected in our comprehensive swimwear policy.
Why Firm-Fitting Swimwear is Important
For all swimmers, but especially children, firm-fitting swimwear is crucial to ensure that their movements are not restricted while swimming. Swimwear that fits securely reduces the likelihood of discomfort or distractions during lessons, allowing children to focus on learning and building confidence in the water. More importantly, for younger swimmers, a snug fit ensures that the swimwear stays in place, providing an additional layer of protection to keep pool water clean.
The Critical Role of Swim Nappies
Swim nappies, such as the Happy Nappy, are a must-have for infants and toddlers who are not completely toilet trained. These specially designed nappies create a secure, snug fit around the waist and thighs, preventing any accidents from leaking into the pool. Unlike regular disposable nappies, which can absorb water and lose their effectiveness, swim nappies are made from materials like neoprene, designed to withstand water while keeping everything inside.
Why is this important? If a child’s swim nappy isn’t properly fitted or leaks, faecal contamination (poo leaks) can occur, leading to serious hygiene issues. Not only does this pose health risks for other swimmers, but it will also result in the pool being closed for cleaning, disrupting swimming lessons, and causing inconvenience for everyone involved.
Happy Nappies have been tried and tested for many years, both during manufacture and in facilities, and are the leading swim nappy worldwide. Their quality is second to none, and reputable swim schools, Australia-wide, prefer them.
It is also worth noting that the Happy Nappy was originally designed for Adults with faecal incontinence (bowel issues) – and as they were SO successful, they were adapted for use of young children too. They come in infant, child and adult sizes (up to XXL) in a range of styles.
The Mandatory Requirement for reusable Swim Nappies (Happy Nappy)
At our swim school, the use of swim nappies is mandatory for any child who is not fully toilet trained, and the only swim nappy permitted in our pool is the Happy Nappy. This specially designed nappy ensures a secure fit around the waist and thighs, providing the best protection against leaks with each nappy being custom fit on site prior to sale. No exceptions are made to this rule. The Happy Nappy is essential to maintaining the hygiene and cleanliness of our pool, preventing accidents that could lead to pool contamination and lessen disruptions. By adhering to this policy, we ensure a clean, safe environment for all swimmers.
Our Comprehensive Swimwear Policy
To ensure the safety and hygiene of all swimmers, we have specific requirements for swimwear in our facility. Our swimwear policy includes the following:
- Happy Nappy: for any student who is not completely toilet trained.
- Swimming Caps: As part of our membership pack, all swimmers receive swimming caps, which must be worn during lessons (compulsory for students in Movers 2 and Masters levels). This helps reduce distractions and keeps hair out of the pool, maintaining better hygiene for everyone.
- Rash Vests for Parents/Carers: Parents and carers entering the pool are required to wear a rash vest. This assists the child in gaining independence by allowing them to reach for and hold the vest instead of relying on the parent to lift and hold them. Rash tops are compulsory for all participating adults in our Mini and Movers classes, reinforcing valuable safety skills for babies.
- No Streetwear/Casual Clothes in the Pool: Casual clothes (also known as streetwear) like cotton t-shirts and shorts are not allowed in the water to maintain pool hygiene. Participants wearing streetwear will be denied entry to the pool. All swimmers must wear proper swimwear, including suitable rash tops or swim shirts. Additionally, underwear is strictly prohibited in the pool under any circumstances.
- Swimwear and Hygiene: Swimwear, including nappies, must not be removed on the pool deck at any time to ensure proper hygiene and in the interest of child protection.
By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure a clean, safe, and distraction-free environment for all swimmers. Our full swim attire policy can be viewed here.
Appropriate, firm-fitting swimwear is essential for children in swimming lessons, both for comfort and maintaining hygiene. For those not yet toilet trained, the mandatory use of swim nappies is critical to ensuring a clean, safe environment for everyone. Swimming caps, rash vests, and compliance with our swimwear policy help minimize distractions, protect the pool from contamination, and allow swimmers to focus on learning. By following these guidelines, parents, carers, and swimmers contribute to a positive, safe, and enjoyable swimming experience for all.
